Our Tailored Closet: Hangin’ Yellow Mellow

Say you have an old, worn-out cardigan from Forever 21. What do you do with it? You turn it into a vest! And of course you wear it on the one day in July when the temperature is actually below 90 degrees  (Hey, seize the day right? And look at the cheery yellow color, you […]

Out and About: Sketch Lounge at Vera Cruz

On Wednesday evening, the Gingers took a field trip down to the new VeraCruz gallery at 2108 Vermont Ave NW.  The evening event was their  Sketch Lounge, which we’re hoping is the first of many to come.  A handful of artists were on site sketching and making art.  Once the pieces were finished, participants could then […]

About a Dress #6

This week’s “dress” is actually an oversized 80s blouse that we scored at Martha’s Outfitters down the street: our go-to thrift shop for items with so much sewing potential! This blouse had shoulder pads, a bit of discoloring in the armpits (after DC summers, who’s doesn’t?), and absolutely no tailoring–basically a perfect item for us […]

Customer Profiles: Margaret

It’s really a special thing to help customers preserve family treasures.  When Margaret brought us this dress from her grandmother, we were smitten with its simple design and cute polka dots.

Our Tailored Closet: Stripes and Billowing Blue

Stripes! We loves us some stripes, especially when worn with  a bold statement piece like our shop girl’s billowy pants. With skinny jeans so prevalent right now, it’s refreshing to see something different (and in such a dreamy color).  As for the tank top, Beth originally purchased it from Madewell. We hemmed it for her so she could actually wear it; it used to hang all the way past her hips  (Of course, it was also too short to be a dress. Don’t you hate that?).   Now it’s just right.

About a Dress #5

Howdy folks! This week’s revamped dress comes to us straight from the 80s, with shoulder pads, stretched out elastic, poor tailoring ‘n all! Our inspiration was work-wear that can still be sexy and stylish without drawing too much attention.

Our Tailored Closet: Scraps and All That

At Ginger Root, we aren’t too crazy about throwing away fabric, even if there’s not a whole lot of it.  So when we have leftover bits, we use them for whatever we can; spats, pockets, patches, and yep, you guessed it, tops! Kristen’s “scrap tank top” was one that she sewed herself using pieces of vintage fabric. Paired with bloomers (of course!) and some spectacular accessories, she still looked chic on a sweaty summer’s day.

Emily is a regular customer here, and she always brings us great vintage. One day she came in with this adorable yellow and white shift dress.

About a Dress #4

This thrift store dress has been with us for a while.  We actually started working on this dress back in the Spring of 2010 and had to put it on pause in order to open our basement store at 1530 U st NW.  Originally it had a long hem and a collar, and the before picture (post hemming and collar removal) here shows that it has little shape, too much fabric still, and staining here and there.
