Customer Profile: Joseph

Joseph came in for his tailoring appointment a few weeks back with his favorite black jacket. It was one of those pieces that I would consider well-loved: elbows worn through, and generally rough around edges. He previously had the elbows patched, which then wore out again 🙂

Joseph wanted to jazz the jacket up a bit, so he could still have it as his staple coat for meetings, but then could ideally wear it for his wedding. I brainstormed design features that could also serve as stabilizing factors on the coat…

About a Dress #16

About a Dress #16
This week’s About a Dress originally came to us from Rock It Again (1528 U St NW), the fabulous vintage shop next door. Definitely intended to be a dressing gown/housecoat from the 1940s, age and sun damage made it virtually unwearable. The sleeves were amazing, but bleached out beyond repair. They unfortunately had to go. I also had to soak the dress overnight in Borax to lift out any residual dirt/age spots in the silk. (Side note: Borax is the ultimate cleaner if you shop vintage. It’s totally natural- been in use since the late 1800s- and won’t disintegrate your delicate garments like OxyClean tends to do. Plus, you can get it at Target and it’s super cheap. Obviously, Kristen and I don’t get paid to endorse products- cause who cares what we buy?- but I would TOTALLY endorse Borax. It’s saved soooo many garments for me!)

About a Dress #15

This week’s About a Dress, or shall I say About a Vest brings us way back to when Erin and I were sewing out of my apartment in Shaw 3 years ago.  I believe we scored this suit set at Value Village shortly after Erin moved out here, and I LOVED the color and buttons.  However the suit set was shapeless, unflattering, and boring compared to sass the buttons had.  This jacket needed some curve and BAD!!

Customer Profile: Kate’s Dress

When Kate came in with her bird dress, she also brought his frock. She liked it but it was a wee bit too short to her liking.

Meet the Artist: Jennifer Jeremias
If you’ve been to our store, then you’ve  probably seen the designs of one of our longest-running artists, Jennifer Jeremias. Jennifer’s most well known for her geometric brass earrings (one of our favorites!),  but all of her pieces stand out as contemporary, sleek and elegantly simple.

Lessons From Hand Sewing 101
A lovely lady named Jennifer took our Hand Sewing 101 class back in August. That very night she was sewing buttons back onto her favorite vintage raincoat! She sent us these pictures of her project.

About a Dress #14

About a Dress #14
This vintage Julius Garfinckel & Co dress has been hanging around in storage bins for so long waiting for that perfect moment of inspiration. There is nothing like finding that perfect dress, with the perfect color, the perfect neckline, and the perfect pockets…And then it hits you! CRAP! There’s a giant brown stain right smack in the middle of the side panel! Every time I brought this dress out to revamp and rescue, I would put it right back in the box with the saddest of faces after rediscovering the unfortunate stain.

However, this time the color called to me and I laid all stubbornness aside. I decided to use the stain as an opportunity for some extra tailoring, and a created an extra seam down the sides, enabling me to tailor the waist in a bit. After pulling the dress apart I decided to have more fun with the pockets and introduce a new color/pattern. I found some amazing vintage stripe fabric, finished off the edges like a handkerchief and sewed this folded pocket into the sides. And to top it off, I took in the waist even more, and let out the hips to allow for some much needed curve 🙂

Our Tailored Closet: Stars and Dots

So we admit that this outfit isn’t from one of our closets, but from our buddy Alyssa’s. She came in to drop off a pair of pants she wanted worked on and lo and behold, she was wearing this cute vintage ensemble. While we worked on both pieces for her, it’s Alyssa’s excellent taste and style that made it happen. Not to mention, it’s a great example of print mixing (without being too over the top).

Over a year ago we repaired this vintage skirt, which had cotton threads that were breaking down and falling apart. The star top was oversized, and instead of tailoring it in 8 inches, we brainstormed giving it a fun cropped hem that was a little shorter in back for that perfect little peep of midriff. Both are great examples of quick alterations we can do on those vintage pieces with much promise! It’s so fun to see these pieces out and about!

Customer Profile: Victoria’s Skirt

Ya’ll remember Victoria, right? She came in with an adorable peach ensemble that we trimmed down for her.  Well,  she also had a skirt that she was looking to spruce up. It was a nice skirt, but she never wore it. It hung in an odd place and she just wasn’t crazy about the overall look.
