About a Dress #11

About a Dress #11
This week’s dress was from an estate sale of an old model.  From the looks of it, this stylish woman put on some weight, and hacked up her beautiful dresses and sewed in stiff black ribbon so she could keep wearing them.  This clothing just had so much to say! As you can see from this dress, we couldn’t give up on it because the fabric was just so cool! All of the black stripes are actually velvet, and you really can’t find silk like this!

Customer Profile: Victoria

Meet Victoria, everyone.  This bubbly and delightful gal showed up to our studio with this awesome two-piece handed down from her mother. The color was darling and the lace details were exquisite , but all of it together was a bit too much.  She felt like something had to go.

Out and About: Meeps’ Relaunch

Anyone who’s been following us online knows how excited we are that DC vintage establishment, Meeps, is opening its doors again. After being closed several months for renovation, the store has re-launched with a whole new setup that includes a new store layout, a buy-sell trade system and a new costume shop (coming in the fall!). We had the pleasure of being present at Meeps’ opening party on Thursday, and what a blast! Drinks, DJs, and of course, vintage galore! The work of owners and curators, Cathy Chung and Katerina Herodotou, definitely shined through. With reasonably priced but impeccable vintage pieces, it was hard to keep our wallets in our bags (yours truly was pining for a $36 pair of white, cat-eye frames).

About a Dress #10

This week’s About a Dress was sent to us by Erin’s mother (Metal Musings!), with the original intent of being sliced up for city bloomers. On second glance though, it was begging to be used as more than just fabric.

Customer Profile: James

James came to us with items that had a lot of potential, but weren’t quite there yet.  This outfit in particular deserved a before and after to show how even simple tailoring can make such a difference.  In the before, his shorts were too long but were the perfect color, and his button-up was baggy.  However, the pattern begged to be his new favorite short sleeve summer shirt (*oy! Say that five times fast!). James-shirt-shorts-final-low-res

Our Tailored Closet: All Wrapped Up

Sometimes you come across a vintage item that is truly a great find but isn’t quite right. Such was the case with Julie’s vintage wrap skirt. With old-fashioned country prints on each side,  it was colorful and cute, but way too long. Julie also had a “construction” request ;  she wanted to find a way to get rid of the tie in the back while keeping the skirt reversible. So we had to come up with a new way to fasten the skirt.  After hemming the bottom, we got rid of the ties and replaced them with buttons and button holes on both sides. Now, Julie can wear it either which way (without any tie or knot sticking out the side). With a plain white tank and vintage scarf, it makes for  a sweet, folksy get-up.
