Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: Welt Pockets

Welt Pocket

We all recognize the those special pockets you see on a man’s suit jacket, but did you know those pockets have a name? It’s true! They’re welt pockets. Welt pockets are small, flat pockets that you commonly seen on men and women’s blazers. They’re distinguished by the use of small strip of fabric ( a welt) that is sewn along the pocket opening.

Welt pockets are useful because they allow you to put pockets on a garment without causing bunching or puckering (that is why you see so many, for example, on the rear of trousers). In general, welt pockets are also a great aesthetic detail and are especially fun to add to structured garments.

We’ve had lots of fun embellishing the welt pockets on the men’s vests that we revamp. Check it out
