Tailoring Terminology: Placket

Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: Placket

The term placket can refer to a handful of things, but it most often refers to the front opening of a button-down shirt (or dress) that holds the buttons and buttonholes. Plackets almost always consist of more than one layer of fabric and there are two methods for constructing plackets.  A separate piece of fabric can be attached to the shirt (after which buttons and buttonholes are sewn on), or the edge of the shirt can folded back on itself.
