Tailoring Terminology: Dart

Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: Dart

A dart is a fold that sewn into a garment to give the garment more structure and a better overall fit.  The added structure allows for the garment to conform to the body’s contours.

When it comes to most brands, you’ll probably see more darts on women’s clothing than you will men’s, but this doesn’t mean that darts are only for women’s garments.  The fit of a guy’s clothing can benefit from darts just as much (in fact, it can make all the difference between, say, a billowy button up and a shirt that’s just right).
