Tailoring Terminology: Armscye

Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: Armscye

Another heavily used sewing term, armscye, is essentially where your arm pit goes. More specifically – the total length of the fabric edge (under your arm), where the sleeve fabric meets body fabric.

The origianl “arm’s eye” was used in older sewing texts back in the 1800’s. But due to poor printing, the apostrophe and the crossbar of the lowercase “e” were hardly visible. Reprints soon began combining the two words together and thus “armscye” was born.
