Tailoring Terminology: Yoke

Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: Yoke

The yoke is a piece of fabric on a garment that is meant to enhance the fit.  It is usually sewn to and provides support for a looser piece of fabric. Yokes are commonly seen around the neck and shoulders or around the hips.  Yokes can also be decorative and don’t necessarily have to be made of standard fabric; they can be crocheted or knitted.

The yoke on this blouse is the solid black portion that sits on the  neck and collar.

The yoke on these pants is the v-shaped piece of fabric that sits in the front (where the buttons are located).
