Tailoring Terminology: French Seam

Ever go to a tailor and have no idea what word(s) she/he just said? Well, we are here to bring a little education into the wide world of tailoring with a little terminology talk. Check back every week for a new term.

Next up: French Seam

There are several different types of seams in sewing. In this post we examine the French seam. In this seam, the raw edges of the fabric are fully enclosed for a neat finish.

Two lines of stitches encase the raw, unfinished fabric edges within the seam itself. A second seam is sewn with right sides together, enclosing the raw edges of the original seam. This hides the edges from view, prevents fraying and creates a clean look.

This stitch is extra important for items that may be a little worn or older.
